Art Supplies for Landscape Painting Workshop

Preparatory drawings

  1. sketch book: size should be suitable to be able to carry around always;
  2. pencils: H, HB, B;
  3. sharpener;
  4. kneaded eraser                        

Oil painting

  1. Portable landscape easel that will allow the canvas or panel to be totally vertical;
  2. Small canvases of pre-primed linen (25x35cm or 35x45cm). Prepared gesso wood panels in various sizes is another option;
  3. Palette, if your French easel does not include one, and an oil cup that can clip onto the palette;
  4. Oil colors (examples of high quality paints are Michael Harding , Old Holland, Mussini)        
  • yellow ochre*
  • cadmium yellow medium*
  • ultramarine blue*
  • cobalt blue*
  • cerulean blue*
  • vermilion*
  • alizarin crimson
  • cadmium red
  • burnt sienna or transparent red oxide or both
  • ivory black*
  • raw umber
  • lead white**

colors with an asterix are imperative;

  1. wanlnut oil, refined and cold pressed linseed oil;
  2. small amount of rectified turpentine;
  3. oderless thinner;
  4. rags: lint free soft cloth as old cotton t-shirts or soft silk;
  5. assortment of good quality natural bristle brushes:
  6. filberts and flats from sizes 1 through 14;
  7. palette knife with a head at least 4cm long.

Survival gear

  1. hat;
  2. bug repellent;
  3. sun glasses that do not distort color excessively;
  4. sense of humor;
  5. patience.
